Radio Mi Amigo - Key Dates (2)

1978

28th - 30th July 1978

Radio Mi Amigo and Radio Caroline off the air due to generator failure – Radio Mi Amigo DJs deny rumours of the station’s closure.

** September 1978

Belgian police mount a series of operations against people thought to be involved with Radio Mi Amigo.

20th October 1978       

Mark Jacobs interrupted the programme and announced that Radio Mi Amigo must leave the air due to a generator fault. Radio Caroline and Radio Mi Amigo went off air 11:54am.

23rd October 1978

Sylvain Tack announced Radio Mi Amigo would continue as a legal operation in Spain and the station begins broadcasts from 5 local Spanish FM stations.

1977

22nd January 1977

Radio Mi Amigo started transmitting French language programmes between 8.00am and 12 noon on Saturdays however the new service was discontinued after only  two weeks.

** February 1977

A Court in Boulogne finds five French businessmen men guilty of supplying goods and carrying people to the Mi Amigo

25th July 1977

Radio Mi Amigo’s programmes moved to a new wavelength, 212m in a further attempt to improve reception in Belgium and the Netherlands

 ** September 1977

Dutch police detain a Mi Amigo tender, Hosanna,  in Zeebrugge

11th November 1977

Both Radio Mi Amigo and Radio Caroline put off the air by a generator failure.

21st November 1977

Radio Mi Amigo returns to the air, but there are still many technical problems and breakdowns

 1st December 1977

In yet another attempt to improve reception in Belgium and the Netherlands Radio Mi Amigo re-launched on 319m using the call sign Radio Mi Amigo International

** December 1977

Another Mi Amigo tender, the Vita Nova detained in Calais Harbour by French police

** December 1977

Dutch press reports that four DJs had left Radio Mi Amigo very suddenly, leading to speculation about  the station’s future








20th January 1977 President Jimmy Carter was sworn in as US President.

6th February 1977 Queen Elizabeth celebrated the Silver Jubilee of accession to the British throne.

26th September 1977

Sir Freddie Laker began his "Skytrain" service from London to New York.

22nd November 1977 Regular passenger service between New York and Europe on the supersonic Concorde began on a trial basis.

25th December 1977

Comedian Sir Charles Chaplin died in  Switzerland aged 88.






25th July 1978 Louise Joy Brown, the first test-tube baby, was born.


22nd October 1978 Negotiators for Egypt and Israel announced in Washington they had reached tentative agreement on the main points of a peace treaty.
