Ships and Sea Structures

The majority of offshore radio stations were based on ships of various sizes, ages and states of seaworthiness. However, a small number were based on more solid structures - generally disused wartime sea forts, but in one instance there was a purpose-built oil rig type of  structure which provided a base for an offshore television station as well as a radio station.

This Gallery tells the story of each of the ships or sea structures which  were used as a broadcasting base and, wherever possible, gives information about their use before and after the offshore stations.

The Gallery also features those ships which were used to broadcast revivals and tributes to the original offshore stations - often for a very short duration to mark a specific anniversary.
