Radio Hauraki - Key Dates (3)



1969

1970

** August 1969

The NZBC challenged the procedures which had been followed by the Broadcasting Authority in inviting private broadcasting licence applications and obtained a  Supreme Court order preventing the allocation of licences in the Auckland area.

** November 1969

After much legal discussion about procedural technicalities it was decided that applications for the Auckland area would have to be re-advertised.

27th January 1970

Hearings for private broadcasting licence applications finally begin.

24th March 1970

The Broadcasting Authority announce the award of two private broadcasting licences for the Auckland area – one to Radio Hauraki  and the other to long time rival Radio i.

1st June 1970

Radio Hauraki’s  final broadcast from the Tiri II - after 1,111 days at sea. Transmissions ended at 10.00pm.

2nd June 1970

One of Radio Hauraki’s DJs, Rick Grant, was lost overboard as the Tiri II sailed into Auckland.

26th September 1970  

At 6.00am Radio Hauraki begins broadcasting legally from landbased studios in Auckland, beating its rival, Radio i, by more than a month.

The ‘Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts’ is staged for the first time as a one day event.
