8th January 1974

Radio Veronica programmes an Elvis Presley Day

22nd January 1974

The Upper Chamber of the Dutch Parliament passed the anti-offshore radio law

1st March 1974

With an easing of the oil crisis Radio Veronica was able to extend its broadcasting hours from 12 midnight to 2.00am

24 hour broadcasting introduced by Radio Veronica

12th August 1974

Dutch government announce that, despite now having 300,000 members the VOO (Radio Veronica) would not be granted a licence or given an airtime allocation on the Hilversum Network The same announcement also indicated that the provisions of the Dutch Marine Offences Act were to become effective at midnight on 31st August 1974.

31st August 1974

Radio Veronica closed at 6.00pm.  The Norderney remains at sea

1975

11th August 1975

After a year silently at anchor the Norderney is towed into Ijmuiden

28th December 1975

VOO finally began broadcasts on the Hilversum Network

1976

21st April 1976

VOO also obtained airtime on the Hilversum Television Network

VOS (Veronica Broadcasting Society) founded

2nd April 1973

The Radio Veronica ship, Norderney breaks from her moorings during hurricane force winds and drifts towards land, finally running aground on Scheveningen beach

8th April 1973

Radio Veronica directors decide to accept Radio Caroline’s offer of assistance for the temporary use of their radio ship, Mi Amigo

11th April 1973

Radio Veronica returns to the air from the Mi Amigo on 253m

18th April 1973

The Norderney re-floated and towed back to her anchorage position. Regular Radio Veronica programmes re-commence from the Norderney at 10.00am to coincide with a major demonstration in The Hague against the government’s proposals to outlaw offshore radio stations

The Dutch Parliament considered the question of banning offshore radio again  

** June 1973

VOO (Veronica Broadcasting Organisation), launched to replace VOS

28th June 1973

The Lower House of the Dutch Parliament voted in favour of ratifying the Strasbourg Convention and in favour of the Bill to outlaw offshore radio stations

31st July 1973

VOO had attracted over 100,000 members which qualified it for a ‘C’ status airtime allocation on the Hilversum Network

8th August 1973

Minister of Culture, Henri van Doorn, announced that the actual number of VOO members would have to be ratified. Subsequently administrative changes were made to the rules for calculating the number of broadcasting society members, effectively reducing VOO's membership level below 100,000

12th October 1973

Radio Veronica programmes a Rolling Stones Day

** December 1973

Radio Veronica forced to suspend its 24 hour weekend service and later in the month to end all weekday transmissions at midnight - due to the Middle East oil crisis

Radio Veronica programmed a special Beatles Day

31st July 1972

Dirk Verweij, who had returned to the management of Radio Veronica just 12 months earlier, died suddenly

30th September 1972

Radio Veronica changes wavelength from 192m to 538m

** December 1972

A listenership survey showed that Radio Veronica’s audience had increased from 350,000 to 510,000 as a result of the wavelength change

21st July 1972

A total of 22 IRA-bombs exploded in Belfast killing 9 people.

11th December 1972

Challenger touched down on the Moon's surface - the last time men visited the Moon.





8th April 1973  

Pablo Picasso, Spanish artist, died aged 91.

12th  April 1973 Vietnam and France officially established diplomatic relations.


22nd June 1973 Skylab astronauts splashed down safely in the Pacific after a record 28 days in space.

29th July 1973

A plebiscite was held in Greece resulting in the abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of a Republic.

15th October 1973 Israeli tanks crossed the Suez Canal and began to encircle two Egyptian armies.






2nd January 1974 US President Nixon signed legislation requiring states to limit highway speeds to 55 mph.

3rd March 1974

A Turkish Airlines DC-10 crashed shortly after takeoff from Orly Airport in Paris killing 346 people.

14th August 1974 The Turkish army mounted a second full-scale offensive in Cyprus - 37% of the area of Cyprus came under Turkish military occupation.





27th August 1975 Haile Selassie, the last emperor of Ethiopia’s 3,000-year-old monarchy, died in Addis Ababa aged 83.





5th April 1976 Reclusive billionaire Howard Hughes died aged 72.
