6th January 1971

RNI’s owners trick the  Radio Veronica captain into leaving the Mebo II  and reclaim the ship in his absence

7th January 1971

Mebo II towed to a new position off Cadzand on the Dutch/Belgian border to be used for a planned new Belgian radio station, Radio Marina

 ** January 1971

After plans for the launch of the Belgian Radio Marina had apparently failed the Mebo II was towed back to an anchorage off Scheveningen. Test transmissions start without any call sign

14th February 1971

RNI call sign introduced

21st February 1971

RNI recommences regular programmes in English

7th March 1971

RNI Dutch language daytime service started

10th March 1971

Radio Veronica takes court action to try and have the Mebo II towed into port for breach of the September 1970 agreement. When judgement was given two weeks later the Court ruled in favour of RNI

10th April 1971

RNI introduces a news service

15th May 1971

Mebo II firebombed

17th May 1971   

Police arrest Norbert Jurgens, General Manager of rival station Radio Veronica in connection with the firebomb attack

19th May 1971    

Radio Veronica Director, Bull Verweij, arrested by police and charged with conspiracy in planning the firebomb attack on the Mebo II

** June 1971

A separate 'World Service' programme launched on the shortwave transmitters each Sunday

2nd August 1971

The Dutch language service extended to 12 hours a day (6.00am-6.00pm)

22nd November 1971

Mebo II adrift after losing her anchor. She was towed back to her anchorage in international waters by a salvage tug and RNI's programmes resumed at 4.30pm

** December 1971  

RNI's Sunday World Service was discontinued as was use of the 31m shortwave band, although 49m remained on air.

** June 1972  

The Dutch Service of RNI moved into new landbased studios near Bussum in Holland

30th September  1972

A new service -  RNI 2 - launched on the 192m wavelength just vacated by Radio Veronica

1st October 1972

At 12noon the short-lived RNI 2 service left the air and was not heard again

24th October 1972

The RNI English Service replaced with non-stop music and occasional announcements in Dutch

3rd November 1972

RNI's English Service reintroduced after the personal intervention of Erwin Meister and Edwin Bollier

12th November 1972

The English language World Service was reintroduced in the 49m shortwave band each Sunday








25th January 1971 Army chief, Idi Amin, seizes power in Uganda.

6th February 1971 British government of Conservative Prime Minister, Edward Heath, recognises the Amin regime in Uganda.

7th February 1971 Switzerland gives women voting rights in state, but not nationwide elections.

12th March 1970 Hafez al-Assad becomes President of Syria.

17th April 1971  

East Pakistan declares its independence from West Pakistan.

14th June 1971 Norway begins producing oil from wells in the North Sea.

23rd November 1971  

The People's Republic of China takes its seat on the United Nations Security Council.

29th December 1971

Britain gives up its military bases in Malta.






3rd June 1972

The Rolling Stones began their US tour.

11th October  1972 A French mission in Vietnam was destroyed by a U.S. bombing raid.

30th November 1972

American troop withdrawal from Vietnam was completed, although 16,000 Army advisors remained to assist South Vietnam's military forces.
