As well as ‘spot’ advertising Radio Caroline also aired many sponsored programmes – either for commercial companies or religious organisations – often American evangelistic groups.


These programmes took the form (usually of 15 or 30 minute segments) with editorial and  promotional material supplied by the sponsoring company. Usually there would be a few records included in the programme, often played by the on-board DJ, to maintain the music output of the station. The religious programmes however were generally wholly  spoken word content – which although providing a valuable source of income, often meant listeners switched off or (particularly affecting Caroline South) re-tuned  to a rival offshore station.
