There was also another more dubious source of advertising revenue employed by Radio Caroline.

In February 1967 Radio Caroline publicly admitted that it operated a payola system – enabling record companies and artists to pay for a certain number of airplays on the station. Once (if) a record reached the Caroline chart listings it would then be paid free of charge until it dropped out of the charts.
