When Radio Caroline launched in March 1964 it operated for the first few weeks from Ian Ross’s office at Queen Magazine. When it outgrew these facilities (and at the behest of Queen owner and Caroline investor, Jocelyn Stevens) Caroline moved to a temporary office in Regent Street.
Just before the merger with Radio Atlanta in July 1964 Caroline operations moved again to much larger premises at 6 Chesterfield Gardens, Mayfair. Telephone lines were installed in the new HQ – with the number HYDe Park 9721, but the General Post Office (GPO) refused to list this in the Telephone Directory under ‘Radio Caroline’. A compromise was eventually agreed and the number was listed under ‘Caroline Sales’.
