The Queen’s Christmas Message 1964

In late 1964 Radio Caroline was trying to establish itself as a ‘respectable’ broadcaster - shedding the ‘pirate’ image.

One way in which it hoped to do this  was by broadcasting the traditional Christmas Day Message from the Queen .

A request was submitted to the BBC (who at the time held the monopoly for recording and distributing the broadcast).

Unsurprisingly the BBC refused to allow Radio Caroline to have a copy  of the Message, saying that as Radio Caroline was not an authorised station it was not entitled to a copy.

A spokesman for Buckingham Palace said “Buckingham Palace don’t specify who should or should not broadcast the Queen’s Message. The BBC made this decision.”
